The once-controversial design for a new, more mature Dora the Explorer doll has apparently been revealed beyond concept art. The pending Dora Links Doll is, according to I4U News available for pre-order, but links to that page on Amazon appear to be invalid. However, I4U News did post a product shot (right), which shows the new, 'tween Dora the Explorer in doll form, sitting at a computer monitor.
When news of a new Dora came out last March, only a silhouette was revealed -- a silhouette that made it appear as if the pudgy, plucky tyke had taken to wearing mini-skirts on a now-willowy, inappropriately sexual form for a supposed 12-year-old girl. However, several weeks later, Mattel put parents concerns to rest by revealing that actual concept art, not just the silhouette. It revealed an outfit that's more akin to tunic and leggings than anything suggestive. As we reported at the time, however, "Still, the lipsticked-looking lips and frilly, bow-laden image seem to suggest that fashion and accessories are more important than outdoors adventures."
While the photo isn't exactly high quality -- and may prove a hoax-- if true, it certainly suggests that a homework-oriented, tech-savvy Dora Links Doll continues the tradition of being a good, if not outdoors-oriented, role model for children.
