Chrysler's decision this week to terminate a quarter of all its dealerships did not hit minority-owned companies as hard as initially feared. But a minority dealership advocacy group is nonetheless upset with the way the company is handling the situation, and has retained a law firm in preparation for a potential legal battle. The chief complaint? Chrysler is giving its terminated dealerships less than one month to prepare, while GM, by contrast, won't shut down dealerships until the fourth quarter of 2010.

Actor Robert Redford is partnering the state of New Mexico to produce "Sundance in New Mexico," a hands-on filmmaking program that will work with and train aspiring Hispanic and Native American filmmakers. Officially beginning on Saturday May 16 in Santa Fe, the program aims to bring Redford's knowledge of film to communities that do not frequently see an abundance of funding.

Hispanic Americans are strongly committed to achieving the American dream of a college education, a new nationwide survey by OppenheimerFunds shows. But in a troubled economy, that goal is "under siege," as only a small percentage are able to save up to make the dream a reality.

Executives at Ford Motor Co., the only Detroit automaker that has not sought government loans or submitted to government control, used to worry about having to compete with "U.S.A. Inc." But lately the automaker's strategy of independence has been paying big dividends. Analysts say Ford's gains have come at the expense of its Detroit rivals, whose troubles have been in the news from coast to coast since the end of last year.

The number of Hispanic-owned businesses in the United States is expected to grow 41.8 percent in the next six years to 4.3 million, with total revenues surging 39 percent to more than $539 billion, according to new estimates by HispanTelligence. Spurred by growing entrepreneurial trends and affluence among the nation's largest minority population, the increase is expected to come at a robust rate of 8.5 and 8.7 percent, respectfully, over the next couple years.

For more than two decades, the annual Hispanic Business 500 directory has served as a barometer of the U.S. Hispanic economy. A purchase of the 2007 directory provides the top 500 Hispanic-owned companies list in Excel format including: CEO names; company addresses and telephone numbers; e-mail addresses for 375 companies and Web addresses for 430 companies; and company revenue and employees numbers for 2005 and 2006.
