Located in one of three minority-majority states in the United States, the UNM School of Medicine has a sustained history of recruitment and retention of underrepresented students. The cultural and ethnic programs and the Hispanic and Native American Center of Excellence promote the medical education and career development of students, residents, and faculty. The Association for the Advancement of Minorities in Medicine (AAMM) and the Minority Women in Medicine (MWIM) are organizations that offer supportive environments for Hispanic and other underrepresented students. The AAMM provides students with informal tutoring and familiarizes them with career choice issues as well as the current political and social-economic realities of the profession.

The University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine enjoys a clinical, educational, and social environment that is rich in cultural diversity. The Miller School of Medicine participates in many service programs to help meet the needs of the community and its underserved populations. The medical curriculum emphasizes cultural competence at every level. All Miller students participate in clinical experiences and provide community service throughout South Florida. This intense clinical training exposes them to a variety of cultural issues and teaches them how an understanding of cultural differences is vital to the delivery of quality health care. Many students also use the opportunity to gain proficiency or become fluent in Spanish or Creole.

Many students on campus participate in organizations such as the National Network of Latin American Students and the National Hispanic Medical Association. UT Southwestern achieves excellence in education because it's home to four active Nobel laureates, 17 members of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences, 17 members of the Institute of Medicine, and 14 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
