Antibody titer response to OVA was similar across treatments (data not shown). The profile of antibody titer to OVA increased (P < 0.01) in all steers in a similar fashion, reaching a nadir within 10 d following administration. Lefevre et al. (2009) reported a similar response time, where antibodies to OVA were significantly elevated in 4- to 8-mo-old calves within 6 to 15 d after OVA administration. The effect of OVA immunization on growth performance and physiological measures addressed above cannot be ascertained because a negative control group was not included because the primary goal was to assess effects of treatment on humeral responses and not vaccination itself.
Other than an acute increase in HCT, steers while fitted with an antisuckling device for 7 d before weaning exhibited similar changes in select measures of growth performance and physiology as those not fitted with the device. Upon weaning, steers subjected to temporary fenceline contact with their dams displayed minor alterations in performance and one or more physiological measures suggestive of their experiencing an acute stress response related to degree of separation or preweaning treatment. Based on limited data reported herein, use of an antisuckling device for 1 wk before weaning may improve postweaning growth performance of steer calves when weaned from their dam by total separation.
