LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/24/13 -- XPRIZE and Nokia are pleased to announce the Judging Panel and Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) for the first competition in the $2.25 million Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE, a fixed-date series of two separate and consecutive competitions over two years to develop sensing technologies that capture meaningful information about a consumer's state of health and surrounding environment.
The Judging Panel is comprised of nine thought leaders and industry experts who have cross-functional and relevant expertise in sensors, sensing and mobile health technologies. Judges will be tasked with reviewing team submissions made during the Judging Phase and selecting the most credible entries in the areas of accuracy and consistency, demonstration quality, technical innovation, human factors, market opportunity, originality and user experience.
The Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE Judging Panel consists of:
•Eric Van Gieson, Chief of the Diagnostics, Disease Surveillance, and Threat Detection Division within the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) •Michael Gillam, MD, FACEP, Former Director of Healthcare Innovation for the Microsoft Health Solutions Group and founded and led the Microsoft Healthcare Innovation Lab •Nate Heintzman, Assistant Professor, Division of Biomedical Informatics, UCSD •Corinna Lathan, Founder and CEO of AnthroTronix •Toni Marechaux, Senior Scientist, Strategic Analysis, Inc. •Rob Matthews, Chief Technology Officer, West Health Institute •Gioia Messinger, Founder & CEO LinkedObjects •Paul Sonnier, Head of Digital Health Strategy, Popper & Co. and Founder, Digital Health Group •Noam Ziv, Founder and CEO, Kesembe Inc.

The SAB includes three industry leaders who are highly regarded in their respective fields of expertise including precision medicine, biomedical informatics, sensors and sensing technologies, mass storage solutions, nanotechnologies, and health and wellness applications. In addition to establishing qualifications for the Judging Panel and approving their appointment, the SAB also advised XPRIZE and Nokia on the development of the judging criteria and final competition guidelines and will continue to provide expert input and oversight on the management and operations of the competition.

Registration for the first Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE officially closed on April 5, 2013, with 33 teams from eight countries competing for a prize purse that includes a $525,000 Grand Prize and up to five Distinguished Awards, each valued at $120,000. During the Qualifying Round, the next phase of the challenge, the Judging Panel will assess team submissions and narrow the field down to 10 finalists. The Final Round, which will take place in September 2013, will bring competitors and judges together, providing teams with the chance to present their sensing technology in a live setting. The winner of the first challenge will be announced at the conclusion of the Final Round judging phase in early October 2013.
