1. Make sure you get your concert tickets from an accredited supplier.

3. Take some time to organise your day and work out which stages, tents, events you want to attend. It would be a shame to miss out on an amazing act because you were wandering aimlessly around the festival.

4. Consider how long it's going to take you to get into and leave a venue; take a snap of your nearest exit, car, or transport spot on your phone if you're likely to be drinking, tired or geographically-challenged.

5. Always compare prices on tickets. No provider can be the cheapest for everything.

6. Arrange meet up points and venues in advance -- you'll be lucky to hear your mobile and you don't want to miss that great act because you are looking for friends.

7. Know your rights -- Malcolm McDonough from Consumer Affairs Victoria says if you bought a ticket to a music festival and it is cancelled, you have the right to a refund. "Just because the terms and conditions printed on a ticket say you can't receive a refund, this doesn't admonish your refund rights," said Mr McDonough. "By the same token, if you purchase a ticket to a music festival and it did not go ahead as promoted, for example, if a headline act does not perform or a liquor licence has not been obtained by festival organizers, you may have the right to a full or partial refund."

8. Stay aware: The Australian Drug Foundation (ADF) has launched a new initiative called 'Get the Effects by txt' where people can text any drug name to 0439 TELL ME (0439 835 563) and receive an instant health and safety message outlining the drug's effects and providing details for a confidential counselling service.

9. Slip, Slop, Slap and Sunnies. Cairin Conway from the Cancer Council says you should use at least one teaspoon of sunscreen per limb. "A great way to make new friends is to hand around the sunscreen between sets or during toilet breaks."

10. Stay hydrated. Nutritionist Stephanie Langton says water is your best friend. "Fruits like grapes oranges and melons have high water content. Festivals are more like a marathon than a sprint. Eat regularly and stay hydrated so you can enjoy the full event and have enough energy to pack up and get home safely at the end."
