New Chairman of East Texas Chapter of SCORE Announced

Jim Albritton of Mineola has been sworn-in as the new chairman of the East Texas Chapter of SCORE, a nonprofit association of business counselors who provide free and confidential business counseling to local East Texas area small business owners or start-ups.

The change was announced during the chapter's annual banquet at the Hollytree Country Club on Tuesday.

Albritton, an active counselor with the local SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) chapter since 2008, was also active in the greater Dallas area SCORE chapter for more than two years, and was chairman-elect in Dallas before moving to Mineola. He spent most of his work in sales and marketing, including Makita Power Tools, VP Hitachi and VP Nikota USA.

SCORE is a nonprofit association of business counselors who provide free and confidential business mentoring to East Texas area small business owners or start-ups. The local SCORE office is located within the Small Business Development Center, Tyler Junior College West Campus, School of Continuing Studies. AWARD

The Lindale Economic Development Corp. received a Gold Excellence in Economic Development Award for its New Primary Website in the category of General Purpose Website for communities with populations of less than 25,000 people from the International Economic Development Council. The award was presented Oct. 2 at an annual conference in Houston.

Lindale Economic Development Corp. President John Clary said in 2011, they sought to create a new website that catered to site consultants, real estate professionals and lay people looking for data. ED Suite of Kilgore designed the site, which went active in March.

The Excellence in Economic Development Awards recognize the world's best economic development programs and partnerships, marketing materials and the year's most influential leaders. The awards honor organizations and individuals for their efforts in creating positive change in urban, suburban and rural communities.

The Lindale organization also received an Award of Merit for its website entry, www.lindaletexas.com, at the Communications Awards Ceremony during the 2012 Southern Economic Development Council Annual Conference in South Carolina.

FINANCIAL ADVISERS

Merrill Lynch announced that financial advisers Vicki Sorrell and Anna Malone joined together to form Sorrell, Malone & Associates in the Merrill Lynch Tyler branch office.

Ms. Malone joined Merrill Lynch in 2011 and has five years experience in the financial services industry. She received a bachelor's degree in finance from Texas Christian University.

Henry & Peters, P.C. announced the promotion of Jim Gomillion, CPA, to senior manager.

He graduated from UT Pan American in 1990. TOUR

Eastman Chemical Co. will be host to 60 home-educated students from Longview for a Forest Awareness Tour at the company's nature center from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday. The tour will be conducted by members of the Texas Forest Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Natural Resources Conservation Service, East Texas Beekeepers Association, and Eastman Chemical Co.

Students will have an opportunity to learn about water, wildlife, forestry, soils, bees and birding.

STERILE PROFESSIONALS

Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) professionals are being celebrated for their role and commitment to patient safety during the annual International Central Sterile Supply Department Week, today through Saturday.

The International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management represents about 18,000 professionals in the U.S. and abroad who facilitate the procurement, management and processing of surgical supplies and equipment. They are responsible for processing surgical instruments, supplies and equipment and provide support to patient care services.

"If you or someone you love has undergone a surgical procedure, a CSSD professional was directly responsible for the cleaning and sterilization of the instruments used throughout your operation," Juan Miguel Ramos, president of East Texas Sterile Processing Association, said in a statement.

SHRED DAYS

If your business is drowning in paper, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) has some guidelines for what you should keep and how long to keep it. To protect your own and your customers' identities, shred anything with private or financial information before you discard it.

"Companies need to keep good records to stay on top of their business and, in some cases, to protect themselves from litigation," Mechele Agbayani Mills, President and CEO of BBB Central East Texas, said in a prepared statement. "A retention program that regularly reviews and destroys unneeded documents can reduce clutter and make it easier to manage day-to-day."

The Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting Business Workshop 2012 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Tyler Rose Garden. Topics will include effective hiring, avoiding costly mistakes with employees, critical keys to leadership, a Washington update by U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, wellness in the workplace, dealing with injured employees and fearless firing. RIBBON CUTTING

Earl Campbell is scheduled to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 7 for the new Super 1 Foods store on East Gentry Parkway, officials announced.

The National Football League Hall of Fame player and Heisman Trophy winner also markets Earl Campbell Meat Products, so sausage and hot links will be offered on the grill when Super 1 Foods kicks off its grand opening at the new 58,000-square-foot store, as well as the company's two other recently remodeled locations on Troup Highway and West Erwin Street.

WEBINARS

USDA Texas Farm Service Agency Acting State Executive Director James B. Douglass announced that two Internet-based virtual meeting webinars are scheduled in October to discuss FSA, Rural Development and Natural Resources Conservation Service program updates as well as the USDA Hispanic and Women Farmer and Rancher Claims Process.

The claims process opened Sept. 24 and closes on March 25. The first webinar occurred Tuesday and the second is set for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The voluntary claims process will make available at least $1.33 billion for cash awards and tax relief payments, plus up to $160 million in farm debt relief, to eligible Hispanic and women farmers and ranchers. There are no filing fees to participate in the program.

The webinars are free and open to the first 1,000 participants who register. Douglass said the webinars are intended as forums to discuss the general plan for the claims process and USDA webinar hosts will not be able to discuss the details of any individual claim during the course of the webinars. Rachel Worthen, a Tyler native, was hired by the Lindsey + Asp Advertising and Public Relations Agency at the University of Oklahoma, one of 10 fully integrated student-operated agencies in the nation.

Ms. Worthen will work with the Zenith Awards as the public relations account lead. Lindsey + Asp was founded in 2009 as a way for advertising and public relations students to gain real world experience.

LUNCHEON

The East Texas Chamber of the Association of Fundraising Professionals is hosting a luncheon celebrating National Philanthropy Day at 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 15 at The University of Texas at Tyler Ornelas Activity Center, 3402 Old Omen Road.

National Philanthropy Day recognizes and pays tribute to the great contributions that philanthropy -- and those people active in the philanthropic community -- have made to lives, community and the world.

This year's program, Faces in Philanthropy, will celebrate philanthropy and all who work to make a difference in East Texas.

The Spark Award will be given to an individual or family with a proven record of exceptional generosity who, through direct financial support, has demonstrated outstanding civic and charitable responsibility and who encourages others to take philanthropic leadership roles on a community, national and/or international level.

The Outstanding Youth Sparks Award will be presented to a high school senior volunteer who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the promotion of philanthropy and volunteerism through his or her work in East Texas. The winner will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
