For over 20 years the Brody School has met the challenges given by the state: to educate the people of North Carolina (particularly Hispanics, African Americans, and others in underrepresented groups), to provide medical care to the region, and to train physicians to care for all the citizens. With 72 members in each entering class, students have the opportunity to know their classmates and the faculty. The school offers courses in medical Spanish, and research and service opportunities address minority healthcare. In 2005, for example, three Schweitzer Fellows are conducting service projects toward the local Hispanic population. Multiculturalism is highly valued, as evidenced by vice-chairs for diversity in every department, along with an associate dean for intercultural affairs.

The school seeks a diverse student body to meet the medical needs of a diverse society. The school actively recruits minority students who are underrepresented in healthcare by participating in minority recruitment events on- and off-campus. The Student National Medical Association chapter on campus works to support underrepresented minority medical students; address the needs of underserved communities; and increase the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent, and socially conscious physicians. The school has a Spanish Club and is exploring a program where students will provide translation services at a local hospital for Spanish-speaking patients. Events such as the annual Multicultural Dance Festival embrace the diversity in the student body and in the community at large.
