A business school is fundamentally about people and the kind of community they form. At UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, people have created a fascinating community marked by a full schedule of activities developed by and for students. Diversity, a key strength of the Berkeley MBA program, can be measured in many ways. Students from a variety of ethnic backgrounds are an important part of the Haas School. A third of the students are from outside the United States, and about 30 percent are women. Students' academic backgrounds vary widely, ranging from science and engineering to economics and fine arts. The enriching diversity of the Berkeley MBA program mirrors the makeup of business in the global economy. "This year, with the support of my classmates, I founded the Hispanic MBA Student Association, the first student business club at Haas dedicated solely to the issues facing Hispanic students in business school," says Richard Velazques, Berkeley MBA '03. "We joined the Black Business Student Association to set a strategy for increasing minority enrollment and support in the MBA program while still adhering to the requirements of Prop 209. Diversity is truly valued by the student body here and we are a community in every sense of the word."
