Carlos Slim, Son of a Mexico City Shopkeeper, is World's Richest Man

March 11, 2010

Rob Kuznia -- HispanicBusiness.com

Carlos Slim Carlos Slim

It's official: Carlos Slim Helu, the son of a Mexico City shopkeeper, has dethroned Bill Gates as the world's richest man.

The news was reported this week by Forbes Magazine, which every year produces a widely anticipated list of the world's richest men and women.

Contrary to the economic malaise around the world, Slim, along with many billionaires, saw his fortune explode last year, skyrocketing by $18.5 billion, to an estimated $53.5 billion.

Only 12 percent of the world's billionaires saw their wealth shrink last year, according to Forbes.

Gates is worth $53 billion. The man in third place, Warren Buffett, is worth $47 billion.

Slim is an engineer, businessman and philanthropist whose energies have largely been focused on the telecommunications industry.

In recent months, Slim has made headlines regarding rumors that he may purchase the New York Times. Slim is currently the company's largest stockholder aside from members of the owners, the Sulzberger family.

In January of 2009, Slim floated the New York Times a $250 million loan. Still, slim this month denied that he intends to purchase the paper.

Although Forbes's list is closely watched, it isn't the only publication to declare Slim the world's richest man. In 2007, CNN made the same claim.

Nothing negative toward MR. Slim, but this brings out the fact that we live in a world where the wealthiest man in world can actually shop in the same store as the poorest of the poor... It is indeed a great feat for a man to become super wealthy; bless his soul; but wealth comes from the earth, and the earth feeds both, the rich and poor; just as the sun shines on both, yet oppression, manipulation, and castration of the spirit are ONLY "enjoyed" by the few.

Without private enterprise, the financial state of this country and the rest of the world would falter. Instead of attacking individuals like Slim for their wealth, we should look internally and see how we too can accomplish his success. We must abandon socialist notions that because he is wealthy, that he is committed to helping others. Bravo Slim

Dolly, dude, the article clearly states Slim is a philantropist. You are either nearsighted or prejudiced. On the other side, I DO AGREE with your comment on sharing wealth. There ARE very poor people in America too. I consider getting filthy rich, regardless of ethnicity or nationality, to be immoral. Capitalism with controls, is OK. The richer the country or person, the higher the moral obligation to help the less fortunate. May you be healthy and happy, and grow ins wisdom.

I bet $1 billion that Mr. Slim could care less about his fellow Mexican citizens who live in great poverty and are starving. Maybe the reason why Mr. Slim is so rich is because he is not generous like Bill and Malinda Gates.

I am sure Mr. Slim Hesitates about nothing and constantly breaking astonishing new heights which leaves all of us speechless. I am proud that he is Mexican and shows that brilliance has no nationality. His passion for business inspires me to push my own discipline and strength in my business and life. -- Esther Guzman Maryland
