The scrappy team from Chula Vista, CA beat the fast-starting team from Taiwan in the Little League World Series on Sunday, Aug. 30.
On the strength of back-to-back home runs in the third inning, Taiwan struck first, and went ahead 3-0. Undaunted, Chula Vista regrouped and battled back in a hard-fought game, scoring one in the third, and rallying in the fourth to take the lead.
With bases loaded in the fifth, Taiwan threatened, but a brilliant move by Chula Vista's shortstop—who cleanly fielded a grounder, tagged a runner and rifled the ball to first base for a big league double play—ended the inning and saved the day.
Taiwan was held scoreless for the remainder of the six-inning game, and Chula Vista prevailed with a 6-3 win. The California team was a powerhouse throughout the tournament scoring 19 home runs in the tournament, and the fifth-straight team from the U.S. to earn the championship of the summer classic in Williamsport, PA.
In a fine example of the sportsmanship that characterized the 16-team finals, the Chula Vista team invited the Taiwan team to join them in taking victory laps around the field.
