Talk about a lightening-fast news cycle. In half a month, Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Sgt. James Crowley have progressed from igniting a verbal race war to inviting each other to family outings.
Gates, who accused Crowley of racial profiling after a misunderstanding led to his arrest in his own home on July 16, Sunday told reporters that he rather likes Crowley, and hopes the two can go to a Red Sox or Celtics game, according to CNN.
"Or maybe the families can get together for dinner -- why not?" he told reporters at Martha's Vineyard Book Festival, where he signed copies of his book, "In Search of our Roots."
The tension between the two men seemed to be diffused last week by a "beer summit" at the White House with President Obama, who earlier had helped the dispute erupt into a brief nationwide controversy with an off-the-cuff comment during a press briefing that the Cambridge police had "acted stupidly."
On July 16, Crowley was responding to a call of a possible break-in when he came upon Gates, who found himself locked out of his house after a trip.
