The Cash for Clunkers program that allows motorists to turn in gas guzzlers in return for up to $4,500 credit on the purchase of a new, more fuel-efficient car might be running on empty.
With people turning in countless clunkers, the government program is getting low on cash. Now, the program might end after Friday, unless the government finds more cash, the Associated Press reports.
According to Bloomberg, lawmakers from automotive-heavy Michigan are making concentrated efforts to get a reported $2 billion more to extend the program.
The Obama administration had originally set aside $1 billion for the program. The program was slated to run through Nov. 1, or when that initial set-aside ran out. That the money appears to have nearly run out so quickly was clearly unanticipated. The auto industry heavily promoted the rebate program, and by Thursday, Transportation Department officials had called lawmakers to ask them to suspend the program.
