July 24 is National Tequila Day

July 24, 2009

HB Staff

Today is National Tequila Day and, luckily for the drinkers of the blue agave liquor, the national holiday this year happens to fall on a Friday.

Tequila's long history began in Guadalajara, Mexico where the Aztecs first fermented the agave cactus and named the beverage octli. It wasn't until the 1800s, however, that the liquor was mass produced and sold as a commodity. And since then Mexico has been very protective of its liquid gold ever since. Mexican-based tequila can only be bottled in Mexico and only made in a few of the country's many states.

Whether you enjoy it in a shot glass with a lime or blended in a margarita, its TGIF and time to enjoy July's favorite liquor. Just remember to drink every time someone says "Ole!"
