You'll find lots of holes in this story, because today is National Doughnut Day. And two chains, Dunkin' Donuts and Krispy Kreme, are celebrating with free doughnut offers.

Stop by a participating Dunkin' Donuts store today, and get a free doughnut with the purchase of any beverage, while supplies last.

You can get into the spirit of the day by going to dunkindonuts.com and creating your own virtual dream doughnut. "Let your imagination, and taste buds, guide you," Dunkin says, as you choose the shape, dough, filling, frosting and topping for your masterpiece. (Ed. Note: Check out our reporter's ideal Dunkin' Donut, above).

You can post your creation to your Facebook page, send it to a friend, download it or print it. About the only thing you can't do is eat it.

You'll probably work up an appetite after creating that virtual doughnut that you can't eat. So you'll then want to head over to Krispy Kreme and ask for your free treat, no purchase required.

If you'd rather make your own doughnuts, get some inspiration and doughnut dish recipes at Epicurious.com. Here you'll find such delicacies as "Doughnut-Hole Croquembouche," "Warm Doughnuts a la Mode with Bananas and Spiced Caramel Sauce" and "Raised Cappuccino Doughnuts with Espresso Cream Filling."

According to Wikipedia, National Doughnut Day started in 1938 as a fundraiser for the Chicago Salvation Army. The goal was to help the needy during the Great Depression, and to help Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I. The ladies served doughnuts to soldiers on the front lines in France.

At the famous Randy's Donuts, noted for the large doughnut atop its shop near the L.A. airport, a portion of your doughnut purchase will go to help the Salvation Army.

So do a good deed, and eat doughnuts today. Perfect with a cup of coffee.
