The U.S. national men's soccer team today upset Spain in a 2-0 victory that ended Spain's 35-game winning streak and advanced the Americans into the finals of the Confederations Cup in South Africa. The 14th-ranked U.S. team managed to put in two goals, one from Jozy Altidore in the 27th minute and one from Clint Dempsey in the 74th minute of the game, according to the New York Times. The Americans were able to keep their lead despite the fact that they were significantly out-shot by Spain, which had 29 shots on goal while the U.S. had only 9. U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard managed to protect the team's net and help propel the team to its first ever appearance in a FIFA final.
The number-one ranked Spain has not lost a game since November 2006 and had not let in two goals in 29 games. The United States' record currently stands at 2-7-1, its only other win to Egypt in a 3-0 victory on June 21.
