Singer Gloria Estefan and her producer husband Emilio are purchasing a "small minority stake" in the Miami Dolphins, according to the Associated Press and the Miami Herald.
The Grammy winners and Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross are scheduled to officially announce the deal on Thursday, June 25, at Land Shark Stadium in Miami.
Ross reportedly has been seeking minority partners and he likely saw the couple as celebrity residents who could help enliven entertainment at the stadium. According to published reports, Emilio Estefan is already creating some original music specifically for the stadium.
The Sun-Sentinel reported that Ross told the media in April that he wanted the team's ownership to reflect the community of South Florida. "I want this team to represent what South Florida is all about," Ross said, according to the paper. "It's probably one of the most diverse populated places in country. You ... want the team to be reflective of that diversity."
In May, Ross partnered with singer and South Florida resident Jimmy Buffett to rename Dolphins Stadium to Land Shark Stadium, after the singer's beer, Land Shark Lager. Part of the stadium is to be set aside as the Margaritaville area and there will also be Parrot Head section for Buffett's fans. Buffett rewrote his hit song "Fins" in honor of the football team.
Gloria Estefan, a featured performer at the Super Bowl in Miami, is noted for her music with the Miami Sound Machine and as a solo artist. Her hits include "Conga," "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You," "Coming Out of the Dark" and "Reach," the official theme of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta.
The Estefans' Estefan Enterprises operates the Bongos Cuban Cafe restaurant chain, which has locations in Miami Beach, Orlando, Miami International Airport and at AmericanAirlines Arena, home to the NBA's Miami Heat. The pair also own hotels in Miami Beach and Vero Beach.
