Carlos Pardo, NASCAR driver, died sunday

A 33-year-old driver in NASCAR's Corona Series in Mexico died Sunday after suffering major injuries from a crash during a race in which he was later declared the winner.

Carlos Pardo's car was traveling at 120 mph, leading during the final lap at Autodromo Miguel E. Abed in Amozoc, Puebla -- east of Mexico City -- when his car was tapped from the behind by competitor Jorge Goeters, and sent into a wall. The car disintegrated, according to the Associated Press. Pardo was extricated from the vehicle and flown by helicopter to a hospital, where he died of his injuries 45 minutes later, AP reported.

Pardo was a standout driver for NASCAR Corona, winning 10 of his 74 races, including the 2004 series championship.

He is survived by his wife Ana and an infant, according to the Examiner.com. His brother, Ruben Pardo, is also a race-car driver, competing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, which is considered the minor leagues of NASCAR.
