Allred Accuses Octomom of Violating Child Labor Laws

May 5, 2009

Suzanne Heibel--HispanicBusiness.com

The scuffle between attorney Gloria Allred and "Octomom" Nadya Suleman appears to be ongoing. Allred is reportedly accusing the mother of 14 of violating child labor laws.

Allred contests that the Octomom is exploiting her children for money by selling pictures and home videos of the newborns to tabloids such as Radaronline. California state child labor laws state that a newborn may only work up to 20 minutes per day, or else the child is considered exploited by his or her guardian. To abate this controversy, Allred has suggested to state courts that a non-parental guardian be placed over the octuplets in order to ensure that Suleman does not use the profits to subsidize family expenses. Allred suggested that instead the income should be put aside for the eight infants' future financial stability.

Allred and Suleman have clashed publicly over her octuplets before, after Allred verbally bashed Suleman on the Today show for misusing her children for profits. In mid-March, Octomom called 911 to have the notoriously pushy lawyer shuffled out of her home after Allred refused to leave.

Suleman reacted to these accusations via RadarOnline, saying that, "People are opportunists, they just want to be in the spotlight. How ironic is that," she adds, as a video zooms in on one of the octuplets she is holding, "that people who don't want [the attention] are thrust into it and those foaming at the mouth for it have to go through extraordinary lengths to get some form of attention."

Although logical, Suleman's sound bite came off as a bit ironic considering she has of late made a living off broadcasting her own extraordinary life through a tabloid Web site.
