The ink was barely dry on the massive federal stimulus package signed by President Obama in Denver in February when the New Mexico State Legislature began pushing a measure intended to attract nearly half of the money just appropriated by the U.S. Congress for renewable energy projects nationwide.
Ill-fated beyond the state's borders, the measure nonetheless reflected the competitive scramble likely to follow the $787-billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Renewable energy and so-called green initiatives are only a fraction of the bulging stimulus package that President Obama envisions creating or protecting 3.5 million jobs over the next two years. As part of it, he calls for a doubling of the amount of renewable energy produced in this country during the next three years.
People in the industry, indeed, appear to be gearing up for a new era in energy development.
