ESPN's Bob Griese Suspended for 'Taco' Comment About NASCAR's Montoya

Oct. 27, 2009

Rob Kuznia -- HispanicBusiness.com

It's been a scandalous week for Walt Disney Company's ESPN.

A couple days after ESPN baseball analyst Steve Phillips was fired for having an affair with a production assistant who went public, broadcaster Bob Griese today was suspended for one week after making a racially insensitive comment about Juan Pablo Montoya, a NASCAR driver from Colombia, according to the Associated Press .

The gaffe occurred Saturday, when Griese was commentating for a college football game, and a graphic showing NASCAR's five leaders in the points race appeared on screen. When another analyst asked why Montoya wasn't on the list, Griese replied that he must be "out having a taco."

Griese has since apologized twice on air.

Meanwhile, Montoya doesn't seem to be taking the comment too seriously. He declined to comment, but did say he'd never even heard of Griese.

As a Viet Nam Veteran I learned about race in the U.S. Marine Corps. My question is if Mr. Griese would have referred to the Black NASCAR driver as to being out getting fried chicken or watermelon would it have been all right for that comment? Would Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton being alright with such a comment? When a white man divorce's his wife is she still considered his sister? I have learned that people say what they really mean and have in their heart's. Let's not fool ourselves America (White) will never change. I had never heard of the "N" word or "Greaser" or "Sipc" unfortunetly till I left the El Paso area to join the Marine Corps. to go fight a war against someone that did not know me as a "Wet Back"! My father fought in Italy during WW2. Sad situation. Art Gallegos

How ridiculas can the Politcally Correct Dinglebells get?? If the comment had been that J. Johnson or Martin were probably out at a Crawfish or Shrimp Boil, or a Steak and Beer Party ....... They would not have been any reaction...... WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE!! GROW UP AND GET A LIFE!!!!!

Why all the fuss over nothing. To suspend someone over a remark like the one he made is beyond me. I am Hispanic and that coment would not affect me one bit. Taco Bell is more American than Spanish any way.
