'Illegal Alien' Costume Being Pulled from Some Store Shelves

Many are outraged over an "Illegal Alien" costume that depicts its wearer as a space alien in a prison jumpsuit brandishing a giant "green card." Understandably, those concerned over immigrant rights see this as a swipe at the Hispanic community.

The products official description reads:

"He didn't just cross a border, he crossed a galaxy! He's got his green card, but it's from another planet! Sure to get some laughs, the Illegal Alien Adult Costume includes an orange prison-style jumpsuit with 'Illegal Alien' printed on the front, an alien mask and a 'green card.'"

But not everyone is laughing. CNN reported that the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) wrote a letter calling for several big-box retail stores to deport the costume from their shelves. The group's Jorge-Mario Cabrera indicated that there is "a political tint" to the costume and that it should be pulled, according to another report.

So far, Target has made it unavailable and apologized. As of press time, Walgreens and Amazon.com still had the product listed as available on their respective Web sites.

Yeah, I guess we could lighten up! Maybe we could also come up with costumes like: An African American slave, or A Jew that survived the holocaust, or a saltine CRACKER. I guess it’s up to those idiots who cannot find enough creativity to come up with a costume that is funny, but not hateful towards “any” group of people. I am an Immigrant and find this offensive.

Does anyone remember the 1st Ammendment? This is just freedom of speech. I agree this is people concentrating their efforts on the wrong issue! This custome is not offensive it is simply funny.

Like ostriches some rather hide their head in the ground pretending any thing goes. Every thing's kosher as long as it doesn’t offend them PERSONALLY. One can burn a flag, paint obscenities on a crucifix. If it’s funny, it must be OK. The costume is not offensive per se; but today's climate makes it distasteful. Lou Dobbs & the Minutemen may find it hilarious; a lily-white conservative who thinks there’s an illegal under every bed, the neighbor who gives your children dirty looks; the two-faced bigot that sits next you at work/school who’s waiting to stab you in the back because you have a better job & speak with an accent; the racist southerner, or a letter-to-the-editor-writer who thinks all Mexicans & foreigners are illegal & criminals. They consider it funny. I say, enough is enough

This is another example of Latinos not being able to pick the right fight. Why are we waisting our time with such an insignificant inccident? Like the Taco bell chiguagua dog and the frito bandito. These are examples of the last time I can remember we were collectively pissed. I for one think it's funny. This illegal alien costume doesn't offend me. Because (a) I'm not an illegal alien & (b) I'm not an illegal alien. I suggest we lighten up and laugh and save our ammunition for important shit. Like education, job discrimination, and healthcare.(just to mention a few) Pinche illegal alien. This could be anyone, especially Canadians. Most of them are white and hard to spot because they look like the Partridge Family. Paul Rodriguez, " I know funny".

This is another example on how "America" makes fun of whatever is considered to be inferior, funny, scary, or belonging to a different reality. In a sense is like not recognizing aliens as same as humans. They come from the outside to trick or treat, to live in the shadows. It is part of how also America used to make fun of indians and the culture they represented. Even though it is not enough reason to remove the custome from the stores. People shoud have the right to dress up as they please and show how disrespectul and uneducated they can be. This is the land of options and fredom of speech.

I don't see the problem. The costume isn't a swipe at Hispanics, but at people who broke the law to reside in the United States. What does offend me are people break the law to reside here then demand that the laws and society change to validate the illegal activity. The door into the country isn't closed, but the flow is regulated. I have friends in Romania who have been trying to move here for years, should they by pass the system and enter through Canada or Mexico?

Seriously, people need to lighten up. It's a clever costume. CHIRLA's censorship is just another reason our society is progressing so slowly.

Luckily the costume is easy to replicate. People are always offended by the truth. All Target is doing by taking it off their shelfs is making it more desirable. I expect to see a lot of illegal aliens this Halloween. The ones in these outfits, as well as the several illegal aliens in our neighborhood. Thank you, Target, for introducing us to 2009's most creative Halloween costume. You have nothing to be sorry for.
