The House has failed to reach an agreement on the proposed $700 billion bailout. The bill needed 218 affirmative votes to pass. It received 205 "yea" versus 228 "nay" votes total. House Democrats voting "yea" and "nay" respectively numbered 140 and 95, while the Republican vote was 65 to 133.
It was an anticlimactic result to more than four hours of intense, emotional discussion. The next steps at this time are unclear but, according to cnn.com, the bill's supporters were already making efforts to put it up for another vote.
