Alaska Governor Sarah Palin will be the GOP Vice Presidential nominee, according to presumptive Republican presidential candidate John McCain's campaign.
Palin, 44 years old, was the youngest governor in Alaska's history when elected two years ago. She is only the second female candidate from a major party in a presidential election, and the first from the GOP. Geradline Ferraro ran on the Democratic ticket with Walter Mondale in 1984.
Palin, a former Miss Alaska runner-up, is a former sports journalist, hunter, and fisher. Her husband, Todd, is a four-time champion of the Iron Dog, "the world's longest snowmachine race." They have five children, the youngest of which has Down syndrome.
The Alaska's Governor's Office touts the $5 billion in state savings, overhauled education funding and a senior benefits program among her accomplishments during her short gubernatorial tenure. She is also widely known to be very concerned with environmental issues--Palin initiated the state's Petroleum Systems Integrity Office, as well as its Climate Change Subcabinet.
Her previous political experience includes two terms on the Wasilla City council, as well as two terms as Wasilla's mayor.
