Mayor
City of Los Angeles

In May 2005, Mr. Villaraigosa defeated incumbent Mayor James Hahn to become the city’s first Hispanic mayor in more than a century. He positioned himself as a unity candidate who would bring together a city that is 48 percent Hispanic, 31 percent Anglo, 11 percent Asian, and 10 percent African American. He is a former speaker of the California Assembly, and sat on the committee that wrote the 2004 Democratic Party platform.
