Ms. Castillo oversees more than 500,000 students in more than 1,000 public schools. She also works with the state legislature on school funding and policy. She has established a Youth Advisory Team to involve students in decision-making about their school. From 1997 to 2002, Ms. Castillo served as the first Hispanic woman in the Oregon Legislative Assembly, where she focused on education issues.
