This year Ms. Benitez received the National Hispanic Heritage Award for Literature. She is the author of four novels: Bitter Grounds, which won an American Book award; A Place Where the Sea Remembers, which won the first Barnes & Noble Discover Award; The Weight of All Things; and Night of the Radishes. Her work has been translated into six languages and frequently appears in high school and university curricula.
