This year Mr. Lopez faced the ultimate surfing challenge – a deadly 25-foot wave at Teahupo’o in Tahiti. He navigated the gigantic wall of water without straps anchoring his feet to the board. In August he won the men’s title at the Honda Element U.S. Open of Surfing in front of 85,000 fans at Huntington Beach, California. He finished eighth on the World Championship Tour.
