Ms. Bernasconi received the 2002 Martin Luther King Jr. Award from Arizona State University for her work with Hispanic youth. The first Hispanic woman counselor in the Tempe Elementary School District, she later founded a trilingual school that emphasized studentsí cultural heritage. The suicide of her 19-year-old son changed her focus to at-risk teens. In 1995 she founded GLAAD (Guadalupe Libre Alcohol, Armas & Drogas), urging teenagers to give up firearms in exchange for computers, bicycles, and guitar lessons.
