| Assistant Secretary of Health Department of Health & Human Services One of the highest-ranking Hispanics in the Bush administration, Ms. Beato oversees eight federal agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Indian Health Service. A native of Cuba, she has served as deputy assistant secretary in the Office of Public Health and Science since 2001. She holds the rank of rear admiral in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. |
