In May 1999, he became the fifth president of the University of Texas at San Antonio. One prime goal of his administration is to take UTSA to the cutting edge in terms of educational technology. In his former position as vice-provost of undergraduate education at UT Austin, Mr. Romo managed retention programs. As an academic, he is a respected urban historian best known for the book East Los Angeles: History of a Barrio (1985), which is currently in its eighth printing.
