Yankees Uses Phils' Game 1 Formula -- Strong Starting Pitching, Two Homers

October 30, 2009

Mandy Housenick, The Morning Call, Allentown, Pa.

The Phillies couldn't get anything going against Yankees starter A.J. Burnett and wasted a solid outing by pitcher Pedro Martinez, losing Game 2 of the World Series 3-1 Thursday night at Yankee Stadium. The best-of-seven series is tied at one victory apiece.

Both teams have a workout at Citizens Bank Park today before Game 3 in Philadelphia on Saturday night.

The Phillies had just five hits. Their only run came courtesy of Matt Stair's two-out RBI single in the second inning, which put them ahead 1-0.

With one out, Philadelphia had the go-ahead run at the plate in the eighth against baseball's best closer, Mariano Rivera. But Chase Utley, who homered twice in Game 1, grounded into an inning-ending double play.

They had the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but Stairs struck out to end the game.

It was Rivera's 38th career postseason save.
The Yankees' first two runs came via solo homers. Mark Teixeira went deep in the fourth, which tied the game at 1-1. Hideki Matsui homered in the sixth, giving the Yankees their first lead of the series. They added an insurance run in the seventh on pinch-hitter Jorge Posada's RBI single.

GAME 3
When: 7:57 p.m. Saturday on FOX
Where: Citizens Bank Park
