For 34 years, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund has been helping Hispanic students -- more than 90,000 to day -- achieve their dreams . Tomorrow night, with The Today Show's Natalie Morales serving as emcee, the HSF will honor five outstanding people and one outstanding corporation with induction into its Alumni Hall of Fame.
Every year the organization selects four individuals who were aided by an HSF scholarship while in college, as well as one non-recipient exhibiting "success and excellence." There are five award categories, each with one honoree each year: Triunfador (The Triumphant), Brillante (The Rising Star), Optimista (The Optimist), Altruista (The Humanitarian), and Inspirador (The Motivator).
This year, 2008's HispanicBusiness Woman of the Year, Dr. Sandra Hernandez, is being honored in the Alruista category. The other honorees are:
-- Carmen Baez, President, DAS Latin America, Omnicom Group, "Triunfador"
-- Adam Aponte, M.D., Medical Director, Brownsville Multi-Service Family Health Center, "Brillante"
-- Edgar Figueroa, Executive Director of The Wi-Fi Alliance, "Optimista"; and
-- Edgar Sandoval, General Manager, North America Marketing at Procter & Gamble, "Inspirador"
This is the first year that HSF is honoring a corporation. This first "Corporate Honoree" award is being granted to Goldman Sachs Group in recognition of what the HSF calls "the long-standing commitment the company has made to the Latino community through several educational and career development programs."
The inductions will take place tomorrow night at The Pierre Hotel in New York City at HSF's eighth annual Alumni Hall of Fame gala.
Frank D. Alvarez, HSF President & CEO, told the media that "We are proud to honor these inductees because they personify the mission and values of HSF, and serve as extremely positive role models for other Latino students." He added, "They are an inspiration to aspiring Latinos everywhere and their success stories are testimony to the impact of higher education and the tremendous difference it makes in their community and individual's life."
