U.S. Colleges Say Illegal Immigrants Should Be Eligible for More Financial Assistance

U.S. colleges are breaking their silence on immigration, urging Congress to allow students who are illegal immigrants to apply for financial aid and qualify for in-state tuition, the Associated Press reports.

In a report released Tuesday, the U.S. College Board, which is best known for heading up the SAT program but also consists of 5,000 colleges, is also asking that Congress provide illegal immigrants a path to citizenship.

The report marks the first time the College Board has officially weighed in on the thorny issue, and came in response to how some states are taking steps to bar illegal immigrants from paying in-state tuition.

Illegal immigrants are entitled to attend American public K-12 schools. But in many states, those who go on to achieve high marks do not qualify for paying in-state tuition, even if they are class presidents and valedictorians.

Since 2006, four states -- Georgia, Oklahoma, Colorado and Arizona -- have made illegal immigrants ineligible for in-state tuition, according to the Christian Science Monitor. South Carolina went one step further, barring illegal immigrants from enrolling in its public colleges altogether. North Carolina has done the same at its community colleges.

However, at least 10 states this decade have passed legislation making illegal immigrants eligible for in-state tuition. One of the states, California, is currently considering a bill that would also make them eligible for financial aid.

The House and Senate are considering bills that would grant illegal immigrants who came to this country when they were 15 or younger and have lived here at least five years the ability to obtain conditional legal status after graduating high school, according to A.P. Called the Dream Act, this would make them eligible for in-state college tuition rates and federal financial aid.

This is the kind of things that really get under my skin. Illegal Immigration is a CRIME!! America can't even help half our own children get through college yet they want to help Illegal Immigrants. Some of you people are too soft and you are probally the same people who never had to make sacrifices for things. I gave SIX YEARS of my life in the military to get my education and inturn my country wants to just give aid to these forigen criminals. It makes me sick how pathedic this is...

it's kinda heart breaking how cold heart alot of people are towards illegal immigrants... most young people going to school here in the US were forced to come here. They had no choice because their parents brought them here... Like me, for example, I am from brazil and I came here when I was six years old... You think I decided on day that I would buy me a ticket to the US and just come live here??? No, My parents brought me here... Life was so hard for us in brazil, and just knowing we could actually have a chance to LIVE and succeed here was great. So we came, my parents worked hard and paid taxes yet I didnt have alot of the right americans do which sucked... But yeah I totally think illegal immigrants should get financial aid... I dont know where I'd be right now if I didnt have it...

In my own opinion i think immigrants should get financial aid. I just graduated H.S and trust me i have friends that even though they were one of our best students in our class wont be able to attend college because they are immigrants. Ive seen it many times that people who have the opportunity to go to college don't and the ones who want to can't. i think that if they get the opportunity to go they'll try twice ass hard and will get better grades then those who are legal. And plus most Americans take for granted what they have and don't appreciate it.

I am a college student and have come in contact with undocumented students on my campus. They are among the most inspiring people our generation can count on. I have met an undocumented student from Kenya. I will help her pay for her MCAT prep course because she can not afford it. I am a broke student myself but I will work twice as hard and help her because it is not everyday that I come across a dedicated student who wants to go to med school and honestly give back to our communities. I want America to be a great nation but we will not be one if we are not allowing all our young the opportunity to prepare themselves to lead us in the future. Please support the D.R.E.A.M Act. Thank you. Check out: http://www.immigrationpolicy.org/images/File/spotlight/Texas%20Undocs%20Spotlight.pdf

Why do you think they shouldn't get any financial aid? Kids going to public schools are usually brought here by their parents. They didn't have any option on coming . Most of the time this is the only country they know. Plus, their parents and themselves work in this society and believe me, they do pay taxes like everybody else. The difference is that they don't get the benefit of it. Like, if the parents never get their legalization, they will never get social security or medicare when they retire. You see, if we educate our young including the ilegal immigrant youth, we will have a better society, with a better future. It's time you get out of your self shell and see around the reality of life. This is one world and it should always be counted as one.

It just goes to show you how incredibly liberal our American universities are.

Why is that illegals are the only group that get a free pass when it comes to breaking US laws. Entering this country illegally is a crime, although some don't think it is. Also, most illegals working are using stolen or fradulent SS numbers. Those are felonies. They should be arrested and punished amd shipped back. No one should get a free pass. Americans don't. Why should illegals?

This would be a huge step forward to help immigrants succeed in our society. Too often we see students who are wanting to better themselves and attend college but are unable to due to their immigration status. I would love to see the Dream Act pass.

I don't agree with Illegal Immigrants getting financial assistance to go to college here. I understand by the articles that U.S. College, I presume student agree they should. First I think Th U.S.A. should take care of financial aid for their own citizens that wish to attend college. The same people that states that the Illegal Immigrants should be eligible for Financial assistance may sing a different type tune if the economy gets to where it can hardly afford to give financial assistance to it own U.S. student much less other people that aren't citizens of the U.S. I really believe that the U.S. even at this time does not have the financial aid needed for Illegal Immigrants.
