Public, Clergy Divided on Padre Alberto Cutie's Fall From Grace

May 6, 2009

Rob Kuznia--HispanicBusiness.com

A day after photos caught popular Miami priest and media personality Alberto Cutie in a celibacy-busting affair and cost him his job, the public and clergy appear divided over whether the punishment fits the crime, the Miami Herald reports.

Unlike the clergy, the public generally seems to be coming to the defense of the 40-year-old Father Cutie, whose career went sour Tuesday after photos published in a Mexican celebrity magazine allegedly captured him having a romantic interlude with a woman on the beach.

The Cuban-American priest was stripped of his duties as the head of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Miami Beach, and as president of Radio Paz and Radio Peace, Catholic 24-hour radio stations run by the diocese, according to the Sun Sentinel.

On Tuesday afternoon, Radio Paz allowed listeners to comment on the flap. Most of them were supportive, the Herald reported.

They also came to his defense in other shows.

"If I were a young woman, I would go to church every day just to look at him," an elderly woman told WWFE La Ponderosa Host Eddie Calderon.

Also sticking up for Cutie were some readers of HispanicBusiness.com.

"There is nothing in the Bible that prohibits any man from loving a woman, even if that man is a preacher of the word of God," wrote one. "Celibacy is one of the most cruel and stupid rules of the Catholic Church."

But a church official expressed a less forgiving opinion.

"A commitment is a commitment,'' the Rev. James Murphy, pastor at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Miami Lakes, told the Herald. "To me, it's similar to a vow a person takes in marriage to be faithful to one person. A priest takes a commitment to be faithful to the church."

The photos ran in TVnotas, which featured the priest in blue shorts, lying on his back next to a woman in a bathing suit on Miami Beach. One of the roughly two dozen images -- which were taken over a three-day period -- shows him kissing the woman, and another shows him sticking a hand inside the woman's bathing suit, the Miami Herald reported.

The Herald reports that the paparazzi for six weeks had been trying to sell the photos at a six-figure price.

Ok, ok - Cutie is a man after all....I forgive. HOWEVER, for some reason I would have thought he would have been tempted by a MUCH prettier and classier woman! Come on now!

I guess we've all forgotten what it means for a promise to be a promise? Whether you're married or not, whether you're a priest or not... So what value does our promise have? If we make a promise, commitment or agreement, what does it matter if we're willing to find an acceptable excuse to BREAK IT?!!! Jesus Christ kept His Promise & by His Blood We have ALL been promised HEAVEN!!! BUT WAIT, our VALUES are flying out the door!!!! Our promises, oaths and commitments MEAN NOTHING!!! Because we are a RUTHLESS & REBELIOUS GENERATION!!! We can find ALL KINDS OF JUSTIFIABLE REASONS --- OUR WORD has no meaning.... Fr Albert, Don't Trade GOD FOR A WOMAN!!! YOU TOOK AN OATH!!! 1st Comandment: Love Thy God With All Your Heart, Soul & Mind, ABOVE ALL SELF!!! TIME IS SHORT!!!

It is true that the cuban community has placed the father at a higher altar. They say he is an inteligent man. I think that he is charismatic because he had gotten involved in communication. This act does not show inteligence but share stupidity. It took some pictures to bring him out of the closet. Maybe that is what he wanted. If he wants a family, become a regular man, and if he wants to continue serving God, go to the missions in Africa where they are in real need. He has shown that changing church is like changing a shirt, when one is no longer of use, we put another one on. Because God forgives our sins does not mean that we can sin because we know we will be forgiven. What he is going to preach about now??? How to stay faithful ?? Wasn't he suppose to be married to Mary????

I as a hispanic belong to the polish national catholic church(Validly recognized by rome) and in our rite of the church Married Priests are the norm. I think that what he has shown is priests are everyday people like you and me. Another note for the first 1000 years of the church priests were not required to be celibate and there was no theological basis for it only after the council of trent did this idea of celibacy become a norm in the Latin Rite. He is not the first i mean look what happend in san antonio a couple of years back with what happend with Fr. Eddie Bernal and his scandal. The only reason there is a scandal is because of the latin rites refusal of married priesthood on the contrary the other rites of the church do and still have married priests. This should be the norm

He was tempted by the devil and fell and now he wants to make it seem like all priests don;t have a chance ... what a pity ... and worse he does not regret it ... shouldn't have been priest in the first place.

1.- We are saved by grace, grace is a gift not deserved, we don''t have to do anything to earn it. Christ already paid for our sins, all we have to do is accept that sacrifice. 2.-There is nothing in the Bible that says priests have to be celibate. 3-To the contrary it says that each man should have his own wife. Sex is something beautiful God made to be shared between a husband and a wife. 8.-I am a born-again Christian, from Iglesia Bautista Estrella de Belen, 510 East 41 st. Hialeah, Fl. 33013 http://iglesiaestrelladebelen.org and invite father Cutie and his girlfriend, along with her 14 year old son to visit us. We are a loving church as "God is Love", we will embrace them with open arms, we have many ministries including radio and t.v. programs in which God can use him.

Padre Alberto is a man! He is a sinner, just like you and I. Who are we to judge him? Where in the bible does it state that a priest should not marry? He is getting so much publicity over nothing, he is NOT breaking any of the 10commandments! What about those priest that do abuse kids, and they do not get any publicity just a transfer to another parish. Is that correct?

“Corruptio optimi pessima” – the corruption of the best is worst of all. All of our priests need our prayers. When a priest fails, we should examine ourselves to see if we did everything we could do for him and his vocation. As a Roman Catholic priest, Father Cutie offered himself completely to God and to all of God’s children. We should not use Father Cutie to gratify our curiosity or to advance an agenda. Instead, we should ask whether we prayed enough for him and all of his brother priests. If it turns out that we have not, then now is the time to start – for his good and for our good.

So sad. I wonder if he had been caught with a man , would he have gotten a slap on the wrist and only moved to another church ? The church need to move into the 21st century or continue yo lose members, close down schools and churches across the country. We are loosing more priest than we are gaining. It seems to me the church should make a place for married men as well as those that actually believe they can live a celibate lifestyle.

Oh! C'mon! Give me a break! Eaitng, sleeping, breathing... those are true needs! Having sex on the other hand is not a need (it might be fun and relaxing and many other good things, but not a "need"). Besides, St. Paul in his letters recommends to the persons that want to serve the Lord to remain single, but if the person will not be able to have self-control, then he/she should marry (1Cor 7:7-10.27-28.32-34). Also, Do you remember Jesus' words in Mt 19:12? He says "[... ]there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive this, let him receive it". If the Church decides to accept married priesthood in the future it will not be because men are not able to have self-control. Our sinful nature is not excuse to relax the rules.

It is sad to know how - for a weak and famous priest - our fundamental Catholic precepts and beliefs are being criticized. Now, certain people want to annul the celibacy. I ask myself, do we have to annul celibacy because some priests could not keep their vows? We also believe in virginity before marriage, because some people could not keep this belief, do we have to let everybody have intercourses before marriage? If we can not assume our Catholic commitments, we have other options, there are other religions that are more "modern", where we can be priests and have family, or have more than one partner. But please do not want to change our Catholic beliefs, because some people can not assume their commitments. Regarding Mr. Cutie, I hope he decides to leave the priesthood in our church.

Our priests’ pivotal duty is to witness & keep alive the Word of God in all of the sectors of society & to bring us the sacraments especially Reconciliation & the Holy Eucharist (which the Holy Father calls the perfect gifts which bring to about God’s plan of love for the redemption of the world.). This requires them unceasing prayer & to remain focus on God and their Divine Call. When a priest abandons his commitment to this Divine Call & becomes too busy, no matter how noble his intentions or how plentiful his accomplishments, he is making himself more vulnerable to succumb to temptations, including sexual license & yes impropriety! Jn 13:16: “After Jesus had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?

I truly think Father Alberto has a lot of pride, if he wanted to carry a romance he should have been more careful, maybe fly to "mexico" on the contrary he goes to Miami Beach knowing anybody could have seing him, maybe all the "glory" and power the Cuban has given to him here in Miami he thought he was "above" the Catholic Church, the Catholic Church is not like going to a Picadilly- you get obn line and you "pick" what you like, if you take the priest vows it comes with sacrifices and one is "celibacy" if the kitchen is too hot then get out, don't become a priest, how about a "fireman"?? All the cuban commnity is giving him a lot of support give me a break, if he was not Cuban I wonder how the commnunity will feel???

Oh my goodness, where this economic crisis will take us? I guess girls want to date priests now to secure some income for their needs. Why women don't get it that Catholic priests are out of limits. Also, priest Mr. Cutie is at fault, he swore in to follow the laws of the Catholic church and knew that it has to abide the celibate rule. If he was not sure, he nay have consiered a protestan church, which is also christian, but don't have that celbacy rule. It is easy to blame it to the laws, and not be man enough to admit his guilt and give up the priesthood, as he is not able to commit to a sacrifice. Kids always find a culprit, Mr Cutie is not worth a priest, he is still in pampers

Padre Alberto is a man, first and foremost. Where in the Bible does it say that a man should not marry. That is a man made rule by the Catholic church which makes no sense. Man was created with certain needs. That means that celibacy should not be a requirement to become a priest. If these men would be allowed to marry, we wouldn't have so many of them abusing little boys and what happened to Padre Alberto would not be such a big deal.

Hi to all...I understand that the Catholic church has their celibacy laws, however, I rather see a Priest with a picture of a woman than having him charged as a sexual predator of minors as other priests in the past as well as being covered up by the church and the VATICAN after having committed their ASSAULTS on minors. Yes, he violated a code, but not a child. That's all Ihave to say...it's time to change the celibacy laws. God Bless You!!
