National Public Lands Day is Entrance Fee-Free at Steamtown NHS

SCRANTON, Pa., Sept. 4 -- The National Park Service's Steamtown National Historic Site issued the following news release:

Steamtown National Historic Site in downtown Scranton, PA will participate in the 21st anniversary of National Public Lands Day by offering an Entrance Fee Free Day on Saturday, September 27.The Entrance Fee Free Day at Steamtown will provide complimentary admission to the park grounds, museums and scheduled walking tours.

National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the nation's largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands.NPLD provides opportunities for the public to learn about shared stewardship, and participate in volunteer projects at National Parks and other related lands.While many agencies have dedicated working staffs, they eagerly accept volunteer help to maintain and care for our treasured lands.Last year more than 175,000 volunteers and park visitors celebrated at 2,237 public land sites in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico according to the official NPLD website.Additional media resources are available at

Steamtown National Historic Site is the only place in the National Park System where the story of steam railroading, and the people who made it possible, is told.On National Public Lands Day, in addition to the indoor and outdoor exhibits available at the site, visitors may join with a scheduled Locomotive Shop tour.For a small fee, visitors can also experience the "Scranton Limited" train ride inside the rail yards.Cost is just $5.00 for all, ages 6 and older.
