Pedal into art at the Cycling Classic

Sept. 04--HIGH POINT -- The annual High Point Cycling Classic will gear up Friday with a different approach to the beauty of bicycling.

While the races themselves take place Saturday on a road course through downtown, a series of exhibits featuring custom bicycles, collectible vintage racing bicycles and bicycle-themed art will be on display starting Friday.

The exhibits are from 5-8 p.m. at Showplace and the Theatre Art Galleries downtown along Commerce Avenue. The exhibits are:

--Five Leading Lights, a display of custom bicycles in the Theatre Arts Gallery

--Vintage Lightweight Bicycles Display, a showing of more than 125 pre-1990 lightweight bikes in Showplace atrium

--Horton Collections Exhibits, more than 50 items of cycling memorabilia on display at Showplace, with race-worn jersey by riders in the Theatre Art Galleries

--Bicycle Art Meets Form exhibit, a display of 46 pieces of bicycle themed art at Theatre Arts Galleries

At a glance

--The USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championship races take place Saturday on a course downtown, with the start-finish line in front of the International Home Furnishings Center.
