Beach Music Blast prepares for sixth year of beach tunes

Sept. 03--HIGH POINT -- A popular concert series returns to High Point on Thursday.

Ilderton's Beach Music Blast will return for its sixth year, kicking off with The Embers featuring Craig Woolard.

The performance will be the first in a weekly series of live beach music through the month of September. All concerts will be held Thursdays at Ilderton Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram , 701 S. Main St., 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Since 2009, the Children's Home Society of North Carolina has partnered with Ilderton to raise money to support children and families in the community.

Courtney Dabney of CHS said all the money raised from Beach Music Blast will go to help the 17,000 children and families that CHS serves. In the past five years, the organization has raised more than $100,000 from the festival to support the program.

"Throughout our partnership with our many sponsors, we have been able to grow the event," Dabney said. "This year, we used Facebook and all of the social media sites in order to increase attendance. This is definitely been a great event for not just CHS, but for the High Point community."

The Ilderton dealership, the title sponsor, helped the Beach Music Blast get off the ground.

"It's an inexpensive way to spend the evening," said owner Tim Ilderton. "Many, many sponsors came in behind us and jumped on board to help promote Uptowne High Point and the Beach Music Blast."

Four award-winning bands will be featured this year, including The Embers on Thursday, JayBird and Soul Central on Sept. 11, Band of Oz on Sept. 18 and the Special Occasion band on Sept. 25.

"They are bands we have used year after year that we have created a great partnership with," Dabney said.

The bands, all from North Carolina, will play Top 40 tunes as well as beach music, oldies and Motown. In the past years, attendance has ranged from a few hundred to 700 per show, Ilderton said.

"There haven't been any events like this to unify the city," Ilderton said. "There are more now, but starting five years ago, there was nothing that went on and was so casual without you having to get all dressed up. It's a real comfortable time of year, and people are trying to get the last bit of summer out."
