Sept. 02--The Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation is inviting the public to a rally at 11 a.m. Wednesday in front of the Hamilton House, 342 South Limestone, to protest its demolition by the University of Kentucky.

The rally is "to bear witness to the senseless demolition and mourn the passing of yet another historic building at UK," according to a press release from the organization. The 1840s Italianate house is being destroyed to make way for new residence halls. UK has already demolished several modern buildings for similar construction.

UK spokesman Jay Blanton said UK was preserving several buildings, including the Student Center, Lafferty Hall, Funkhouser and Patterson Halls.

"At the same time, we believe strongly that our campus revitalization efforts are being done, as they should be, with our top priority in mind -- the success of students," Blanton said.

Demolition is scheduled to begin next week," Blanton said.
