South Africa : Allen & Overy gears up for launch in South Africa

September 1, 2014

With the appointment of a team from local company Bowman Gilfillan led by banking head Lionel Shawe, Allen & Overy (A&O) is said to be gearing up for a launch in South Africa.

Although neither he nor the company would confirm the move, Shawe, whose last day at Bowman Gilfillan was on 29 August, is said to be taking a team of up to seven partners with him to A&O.

A&O's managing partner David Morley and ex-banking chair Michael Duncan have both been to Johannesburg recently.

Duncan is said to be moving to South Africa to lead the venture.

Competitor Linklaters appointed South African company Webber Wentzel as an ally at the end of 2012 (3 December 2012), but A&O would be the first of the British magic circle to have its own presence on the ground in South Africa.
