Thane: Ganeshotsav is barely few weeks away and many housing societies across Thane have already started preparing for the festival in a unique way.

The societies have planned to bid adieu to the notice boards and are using FB pages, WhatsApp groups and phone messages to update the residents about the puja and other related schedule during the festival.

Shivesh Gupta from Happy Valley Society informed, "Nowadays, people are so engrossed in their phones and social networking sites that they don't pay any attention to the notice board. So, we decided to update the Facebook page of the society with the schedule. In this way, the entire group would know about the programmes."

In an attempt to emphasise on the eco-friendly festival, K Kumar, president of Vasant Vihar Appexe Society said that wasting paper on notice board or for any other communication is not justified. "This is the reason we have chosen to go e-way and celebrate an eco-friendly festival," he added.

According to Ulhas Karl, chairman, Prestige Garden Society, who is known for adopting many eco-friendly measures, "The young people of our society are very active; every resident is having an eco-friendly celebration and so everyone has unanimously decided to say no to mindless use of paper and communicate among themselves through messages and WhatsApp. They have also devised a plan about how they would plan things with minimum or no use of paper."

This year, Thane's housing societies have gone a step further by pledging to bring in an eco-friendly Ganpati. "We have a group of five people who have been entrusted with responsibility of keeping an update about various events in the society. They are the IT (Information Technology) group of our society who would be updating everyone about latest events in the society. They will be doing paperless work and follow eco-friendly ways," said Bivek K from Subharambh Complex, Thane.
