New York stocks rebound on hopes for eased Ukraine tension

August 8, 2014

New York stocks sharply rebounded Friday on hopes for eased tension over Ukraine, with the Dow index posting the year's fourth biggest gain at the closing.

The 30-issue Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 185.66 points, or 1.13 percent, to end at 16,553.93. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index gained 35.93 points, or 0.83 percent, to 4,370.90.

Investors were encouraged by better-than-expected U.S. labor productivity data for the April-June period and by news reports that Russia was ending military drills near the Ukrainian border, a market source said.
