Aug. 08--The recent success of summer concerts, and other events sponsored by the town of Cheraw, have prompted Cheraw Town Council members to consider purchasing a portable dance floor.
While the Cheraw Community Center offers plenty of room for a band, and space to dance, a tarp is placed over the gymnasium floor to protect it from scuffing during these events. The tarp, however, is not conducive for dancing; especially for shag dancing.
Cheraw Town Administrator Mike Smith said he has asked Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services Director Jay Bennett to research prices for a dance floor that can be used at the Community Center and other venues.
To rent a dance floor, said Smith, costs about $300 an evening.
Town Councilman Reid McBride suggested the investment could eventually be a moneymaker for the town. People hosting private events at the Community Center, he said, could also rent the dance floor from the town.
Council member Jacqueline Ellerbe-Shannon is helping to coordinate a National Night Out event for the community Oct. 7. At Tuesday's briefing meeting, she asked Mayor Andy Ingram to place a request for funding for the event on next week's agenda. Last year, Ellerbe-Shannon said, the town spent $1,500 on the event.
"This year, we'd like to get a little bit more than that," she said.
The regular monthly meeting for Cheraw Town Council will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Cheraw Town Hall.
