Aug. 07--TUPELO -- The guitar is a versatile instrument, and two guitarists will show off their very different styles at this weekend's Monthly Music Mix concert.

Tupelo natives Jim Tomlinson and Michael Boyd will share the stage at the Link Centre on Saturday. They'll perform separately and together.

Tomlinson, who now lives in Madison, has more of a rock 'n' roll and folk-style approach to the guitar, while Boyd is a classical guitarist and instructor at Jones County Junior College.

Tomlinson grew up singing and started playing guitar in college.

"I never took a lesson. I played with friends and played for fun, picking up tips from different people," he said.

His band, Blue Tattoo, toured the region and shared the stage with bands like Sister Hazel, the North Mississippi Allstars and the Wailers, but the band broke up after several years.

Since then, Tomlinson has performed across the state while taking care of his son.

"It's nice to be able to make money doing something you love," he said.

Tomlinson likes other singer-songwriters who have good voices and lyrics, like Eddie Vedder and Marc Broussard, and his style is similar.

He hopes he and Boyd can work up a few tunes to perform together, but he's also eager to show off his original songs and discuss how he writes.

Similarly, Boyd hopes to showcase his Latin-inspired style.

Lately he's filled his time studying Spanish composer Federico Moreno TÓrroba. He's released an album of Torroba's works and is preparing a paper on him.

"I'm into jazz and pop, but my real interest is in Spanish music," he said. "I've found it helps to do a variety of things."

He's a Centaur Records artist and has released several albums.

At the show, Boyd hopes to do a few songs on the steel-string guitar.

"It's a good opportunity to do a retrospective of guitar music," he said. "Some of what I'll play will be familiar and some of it won't be."

Both musicians are eager to share the stage and learn from each other, and share that music with the audience.

"I'm looking forward to it," Tomlinson said. "I hope to see a lot of people Saturday."
