Jena Irene, Jeff Gutt, Spinners highlight Arts, Beats & Eats lineup

August 7, 2014

Aug. 07--Homecoming performances by Jena Irene ("American Idol"), Jeff Gutt ("The X Factor") and the Spinners highlight a 2014 Ford Arts, Beats & Eats music lineup that also features .38 Special, Third Eye Blind and Night Ranger.

Full details will be unveiled today for the 17th annual AB&E, scheduled Aug. 29-Sept. 1 in downtown Royal Oak.

More than 200 bands and entertainers are led by the action on the Michigan Lottery National Stage, where top names include the Village People, Theory of a Deadman, Randy Houser and Maddie & Tae.

The Aug. 30 performance by Jena Irene (8:30 p.m.) will be the Farmington Hills singer's first Oakland County show since her runner-up finish on "Idol" in May. Gutt, who will perform just ahead of her that same night, was the second-place finisher on last season's "X Factor." He debuted his new band at April's Detroit Music Awards.

Six other stages at the Labor Day weekend fest are programmed with a broad selection of local music, children's entertainment and circus-style exhibitions.

Also being announced is this year's lineup of more than 50 participating restaurants, including newcomers such as Morton's the Steakhouse, Andiamo Pizza Pie and Famous Dave's barbecue.

AB&E's art competition will feature artists in 135 booths contending for $7,500 in cash prizes, including 2013 winners Mikel Robinson (photography), Tim Gralewski (printmaking) and Brian Shope (woodworking).

As the Free Press reported in June, new festival features will include an NBA-sponsored interactive basketball experience and a series of hair-styling showcases by Royal Oak salons. Also on tap are the popular Zumbathon fitness event (Aug. 30), the Deaf Arts Festival and family days for autistic children (Aug. 30 and Sept. 1).

Some events require advance registration -- see www.artsbeatseats.com for details.

AB&E will kick off at 11 a.m. daily, running through 11 p.m.Aug 29-31 and through 9:30 p.m. closing night. Entry will be $5 after 3 p.m., and $3 prior. As in past years, a portion of admission fees and concession sales will be distributed to local community groups.

Last year's fest drew about 355,000 attendees, said director Jon Witz, with a total charitable donation of $385,000, the top fund-raising year in AB&E history.
