BRIEF: Expect John Butler Trio to mix styles at Orlando jam

August 7, 2014

By Jim Abbott, Orlando Sentinel

Aug. 07--Early in his career, Australian pop-rock star John Butler opened for the Dave Matthews Band, a match that's well-suited to Butler's energetic, eclectic style.

Butler's sound has been hard to pinpoint since his self-titled 1998 debut album. The material has always melded folk, funk, reggae and rock into a hybrid that fits well with Butler's non-musical interest in skateboarding. "I see it as like another art form," Butler said at a 2013 rally to support the construction of a new skate park in Australia. "It's definitely artistic, physical expression."

Musically, Butler's expression continues to blend genres on the new "Flesh --Blood," with bassist Byron Luiters and drummer Nicky Bomba. The songs mix the band's signature jams with a few introspective ballads.

The John Butler Trio will perform Nov. 6 at Plaza Live in Orlando. Tickets are $25-$35 on sale Friday, Aug. 8.
