Aug. 06--SAN BERNARDINO -- The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians has bestowed upon the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra a grant of $60,000, which will be used to sponsor two concerts during the symphony's 2014-2015 season.
The two concerts -- "Home for the Holidays" and "Musical Genius in America" -- were selected because of their family focus and educational value.
"Home for the Holidays" debuts Dec. 20 and will include Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker," Leroy Anderson's "Festival of Carols" and a community sing of Handel's "Messiah." A pre-concert family music fair will include readings from holiday classics as well as performances by a children's choir.
"This is our first holiday performance in many years," said symphony board president and former San Bernardino Mayor Judith Valles in a news release, "There are very few local entertainment options at the holidays, so we wanted to meet that need with a concert that allowed people to gather close to home and share the warmth of the season."
"Musical Genuis in America" runs Feb. 6 and 7, and is actually a series of concerts celebrating Black History Month. More than 3,400 students from the San Bernardino City Unified School District will attend the Feb. 6 performance. They will be provided a tour of the historic California Theater before hearing selections from classical composers such as George Gerswhin, Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington, and William Grant Still.
"We are pleased to have received the consistent partnership of both the district and the tribe that, together, will allow so many children to experience live music," symphony Executive Director Anne Viricel said in a statement Tuesday. "I've heard stories of the years when there was no support for the student concert and cannot fathom not being able to bring this gift to the children of our community."
Tickets, which start at $11 for students, can be purchased by calling: 909-381-5388 or online at www.sanbernardinosymphony.org. Tickets can also be purchased at the symphony box office at 198 N. Arrowhead Ave., in San Bernardino.
