Pakistan keen to host Organization of Islamic Countries' summit on Science and Technology Innovation: Zahid Hamid - Press Note issued by Press Information Department

Secretary General Organization of Islamic countries (OIC) H.E Iyad Ameen Abdullah Madani called on Federal Minister for Science and Technology Mr. Zahid Hamid here in his office.

Areas of mutual interest, cooperation in the field of education, science and technology came under discussion. The Minister briefed about the Ministry of Science and technology and its attached organizations.

He apprised that the Ministry of Science and Technology is the key ministry working vigorously for the Scientific and technological policies, formulation of standards, popularization of Science and Research and development in the country.

He said that two of the leading universities in Pakistan, the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) and COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) were under the administrative supervision of the ministry.

"The ministry has its organization like Pakistan Council for scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) Pakistan council for research in water resources(PCRWR) Pakistan council for renewable energies technologies (PCRET) National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) are researching in the field of industrial , energies and water sectors of the country "he added.

The Minister also highlighted that "under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif the present government is giving top priority to S and T sectors and R and D in nanotechnology , fuel cell technology, bio technologies etc are in progress.

The Minister also informed that Pakistan Halal Regularity Authority was going to be enacted in the coming month, which would paved the way for the exports of Halal products of food and non food items not only in OIC member states but also in other regions as demands of halal products have taken an international momentum and annually $3 trillion trade of halal products was recorded.

He said that the ministry of science and Technology have strong liaison with the UN agencies and UNIDO was helping to remove the technical barriers for upgrading the Pakistani products at par the requirements of WTO.

They agreed that development in the field of science and technology was the cry of the day. The Muslim Ummah has to equip itself with the modern education especially in the field of science and Technology.

They also agreed that close linkages might be developed among NUST and CIIT with the five international Islamic universities of OIC member states. Pakistan has also offered its services for the proposed energy security project of OIC as Pakistan have good expertise in energy conservation both in renewable and non renewable energies.

On promoting cooperation in the field of Science and technology in the Muslim Ummah the Minister said that as chairman Standing Committee on Science and Technology Pakistan has been playing a constructive role in making COMSTECH an effective and vibrant body for promoting Science and Technology among the member states, adding that Pakistan was keen to host the OIC Summit on Science and Technology Innovation along with the 15th General Assembly meeting of COMSTECH in first quarter of 2015.

Mr. Iyad Ameen Abdullah Madani, OIC Secretary General commended the positive role of Pakistan in the Muslim world and the OIC activities and expressed hope that Pakistan would continue to play its active role in strengthening unity in Muslim Ummah and various activities of the OIC.

OIC Secretary General was accompanied with Mr. M Naeem Khan, Assistant Secretary General OIC for Science and Technology, and Mr. Salahuddin Mahmud, Political Officer, OIC Secretariat. While the Minister was assisted by, Mr. Kamran Ali Qureshi and all the heads of 15 organizations working under the ministry of Science and Technology.
