Contract Awarded for The conceptual design of an asteroid capture system

Contract was awarded for NASA%s Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM).

The ARM forms a critical part of NASA%s technology development plans for future human spaceflight operations and the overarching goal of a manned Mars mission.

The goal of this contract is to design a system capable of capturing and securing an asteroid as wide as 10 meters and as heavy as 1,000 metric tons. Jacobs% concept uses a series of deployable booms that unfold and extend around the target asteroid. NASA is interested in the technology not only for ARM, but also for capture of unresponsive satellites or other large orbital debris.

This is one of four awards made by NASA for asteroid capture system concepts. Jacobs is constructing a physical model of the proposed design and demonstrating a successful capture using a simulated asteroid.
