BRIEF: Competitors push through rain at 18.12 Challenge and Half Marathon in Sackets Harbor

Aug. 31--SACKETS HARBOR -- Runners from across the area pushed through heavy winds and rain early Sunday morning for the 18.12 Challenge and Half Marathon.

The event, in its third year, drew out about 800 people representing 29 states and Canada.

Entrants could race either a half marathon (13.1 miles) or the 18.12 Challenge (18.12 miles), stretching from Immaculate Heart Central High School on Ives Street, Watertown, to the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site.

In the half-marathon, Nick Webster of Albany finished first with a time of 1 hour, 17 minutes and 31 seconds. Rounding out the top ten are Richard Cohen, Randy Demar, Jack Tarpey, Steve Doe, Toby Woodard, Brigid Heenan, Jim Allott, PJ Banazek and Bill Street.

In the 18.12 challenge, Sam Morse, of Camden won with a time of 1 hour, 39 minutes and 9 seconds. He was followed by Joe Whelan, Lawrence Joseph Franks Jr., Dan Szilagyi, John Evangelista, Thaddues Pajak, Jose Moncada, Carl Zeh, James Brennan and Jon Terpstra.
